Things I am excited about, part I

For the first time, I’m living in Edinburgh (well, sort of) during the Fringe. This has made it possible to see even more shows than last year. And it’s also given me the chance to work on my rage control techniques.

Of all the shows I’ve seen thus far, the most enjoyable were the two late-night extravaganzas: Spank and the Free Beer Show. Fortunately the latter enabled me to trade my beverage for a Smirnoff Ice, and the two shows were at times uproarious. Plus, at Spank, we saw John Leslie in the crowd. Sadly, the comedians chose not to accept this absolute gift, and we had to make do with casting our own asides about the erstwhile Blue Peter presenter. Another treat was Simon Munnery’s AGM, which lasted a mere fifty minutes at The Stand, but went on for another two hours outside the back of the Star Bar, ending only when an irate local came out to call a halt to proceedings.

Even though comedy is what the Fringe is really about (and I won’t let anyone try to tell me otherwise), there is also a musical bill in August. T on the Fringe brought us Regina Spektor last night, and she was quite adorable. However, I’m really looking forward to the double-header of Belle & Sebastian on Sunday, and Dirty Pretty Things on Monday. I don’t know anything about Carl BarĂ¢t’s new band, but I know they’re being supported by Voxtrot, and that makes them okay in my book.

Of course, I’m really supposed to be finishing off my dissertation in these days of August, and it gets handed in on Friday. Fever pitch ensues!

Oh, Derek, I’m so jealous - you got to see Regina Spektor and Belle & Sebastian. I missed both :( was too busy with my dissertation to get the tix.
But I saw lots of comedy right after I submited the damn paper. The most hysterical was the Naked Racist, he actually won the best comedian of the Fringe award this year.
